What to engrave on a bracelet: 40 ideas that don't sound like a greeting card
The hardest part of ordering personalized jewelry is not choosing the piece. It is the empty box asking what you want engraved. Here is how to fill it.
First, how much space do you have?
Engraving space varies by piece. As a rough guide:
- Inside a bracelet or cuff: usually 15 to 30 characters, enough for a short line or a name and date
- A pendant back: often 20 to 40 characters across two lines
- A name in cut-out script: normally up to 8 to 10 letters, because each letter is a physical shape
Every Beyond Love product page states the limit for that design. If your line is longer than the limit, cut words rather than shrinking the text, because small engraving is harder to read than short engraving.
For a partner
- The date you met
- Still you
- I'd choose you again
- Home
- Your coordinates, for the place it started
- Us, since 2019
- Come back to me
- You already know
- My favourite person
- Every day, on purpose
For a wife or husband
- Your wedding date
- The year you married, in roman numerals
- Still my best decision
- Through all of it
- You, then everything else
- Forever yours
- Partner in everything
- I would marry you again
For a mother or grandmother
- Her children's names
- Mum, always
- Thank you for everything, quietly
- You taught me this
- Your grandchildren's names and birth years
- I got it from you
- Love, your kids
For a father, son or brother
- Keep going
- Dad, I was watching
- You already are
- Strength, in your own words
- A date that mattered to him
- Proud of you, always
- Call your mother
For a daughter or a child
- Her name and birth date
- Braver than you know
- You will outgrow my arms, never my heart
- Always my girl
- Come home whenever
For a friend
- Both your initials
- Since 2011
- You know what you did
- Partner in crime
- Thank you for staying
Three things to avoid
- Long quotes. They shrink the text until nobody can read it. Keep it under the character limit comfortably, not exactly at it.
- Nicknames they might outgrow. Engraving is permanent; a childhood nickname at 8 reads differently at 28.
- Emojis and unusual symbols. Many engraving machines cannot reproduce them, and they can arrive as blank boxes.
If the words still won't come
Write what you would say if nobody else could hear you, then cut it down to the shortest version that still means it. The best engravings we see are almost always six words or fewer, and they are never clever. They are just true.
Every Beyond Love order also arrives with a printed message card, so if your line is longer than the engraving allows, put the short version on the metal and the full version on the card.
