Name necklace chain lengths: how to choose when it's a surprise
Chain length is the one thing people worry about when buying a necklace as a surprise. It is simpler than it looks.
Where each length sits
| Length | Where it falls |
|---|---|
| 16 inches | At the base of the neck, like a choker on most adults |
| 18 inches | At or just below the collarbone. The most common choice |
| 20 inches | A little below the collarbone, sits over most necklines |
| 22 inches and longer | On the chest. Suits pendants meant to be seen over clothing |
If you cannot measure, choose adjustable
Most Beyond Love chains adjust, roughly 17.7 to 21.7 inches, which covers the great majority of adults. An adjustable chain turns a guess into a non-issue, and it also lets her wear the same piece with different necklines.
How to measure without being noticed
- Measure a necklace she already wears and likes, laid flat, clasp to pendant and doubled
- Or use a piece of string around the neck where you want it to sit, then measure the string
Name length changes the look
A long name in cut-out script is physically wider, so it needs more room to hang flat. For names over about eight letters, a slightly longer chain sits better, because a wide pendant on a short chain can curl at the collarbone.
Layering
If she layers necklaces, two inches between chains is the rule that works: 18 and 20, or 16 and 18. Keep the name piece on the shorter chain so it is not hidden.
Men's chains
Men usually wear 20 to 24 inches. For a cross pendant or a cuban chain worn under a shirt, 22 inches is the common choice.
The safe answer
If you genuinely do not know: adjustable, 18 inches as the starting point, silver finish. That combination fits and suits more people than any other, and it leaves the personal part to the name and the message card.
